Trent Taekwondo
For the last several years Trent Taekwondo has been providing the Trent University community with martial art instruction of the highest possible order. The club is dedicated to introducing Trent University students and staff to modern martial arts study while providing more advanced instruction to those who have been studying any other martial art or system. We provide this in a friendly, supportive atmosphere with the emphasis on personal development through fitness, self-defense and sport.
What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is the modern name for a synthesis of many traditional Korean martial arts. Taekwondo is noted for it’s dynamic kicking techniques but also includes hand striking and self-defense techniques. Trent Taekwondo provides a comprehensive curriculum embracing all aspects of modern martial arts practice.
What is taught at Trent Taekwondo?
The primary focus is to provide interested Trent students with an introduction to modern martial arts practice. Fitness and practical self-defense are primary goals of this club. A traditional atmosphere ensures that the curriculum is taught in a fashion that makes retention and practical application possible with sufficient practice. The instructors have a varied background in many martial disciplines ensuring that a wide selection of techniques is taught. Training includes solo and partnered practice along with the aforementioned self-defense. Competitive sparring and forms are also introduced. Self-defense instruction covers both upper and lower body striking, wrist manipulation and throwing. Self-defense against single and multiple attackers is also introduced along with defense techniques against common weapons. The classes are structured to encourage students to ask questions or introduce self-defense situations they would like explored.
For those who are interested in the competitive aspect of martial arts sparring classes are held on site. A select number of Ontario Taekwondo Association sanctioned tournaments are attended throughout the academic year.
More traditional elements of martial arts including belt grading are pursued at Trent Taekwondo. Aspects of philosophy, touching on Confucianism and Taoism and their relevance to modern martial arts, are introduced and discussed. Basic breathing techniques are also explored.
Since all students at Trent are transitional another primary goal is to give a broad base of experience that can apply to the future study of Taekwondo or any other martial art.
Who can join?
Any currently registered Trent student or staff member may attend Trent Taekwondo classes. Trent University staff must have a current membership with the Athletic Complex. Students who have recent experience in any other martial art are welcome to attend classes at their current rank and with present uniform. The seniority rules at Trent Taekwondo are similar to those practiced at most other martial arts schools. For the experienced martial artist Trent Taekwondo seeks to supply all practitioners with a different perspective and add to their array of martial art techniques. We value the experience all other practitioners bring to Trent Taekwondo and anticipate their experience enriching the club atmosphere, as they are able to integrate the Trent Taekwondo experience in to their martial art education.
