A Short and Incomplete History of Trent Taekwondo

At Trent Taekwondo I am striving to develop a complete history of taekwondo at Trent University. I am lacking a lot of information, particularily previous to 1990 or from 1996-99. If you have any information or pictures from taekwondo at Trent you can reach me at sabum@trenttaekwondo.com. All information and pictures will be credited on this website.

Doug Johnson
TRENT/FLEMING/PSWC TAEKWONDO

1st place, 1991 University Championship 1990-91
The unofficial Trent Taekwondo club was started by Tom Locke, who was the head instructor of Peterborough Taekwondo School. Tom was also a student at Trent, studying for a degree in Psychology. The Trent club was formed with the intention of running classes at the university but unfortunately space was not available. So the team was essentially a competitive entity made up of both Trent and Sir Sandford Fleming students. The team competed at the University Taekwondo Tournament held annually at the University of Ottawa. The inaugural team won the first place trophy.

1991-92
The team repeated its win as University Tournament Champions at the University of Ottawa. This team, again a joint venture between Trent and Sir Sandford Fleming, trained at the Peterborough Taekwondo School.

1994 University Taekwondo Championship 1992-93
Trent Taekwondo continued as a regular club at Trent University operated by Doug Johnson. The competition team remained active at various tournaments throughout the year. The club grew to more than twenty members.

1993-94
Trent Taekwondo was started as a complete taekwondo program at Trent University by Doug Johnson with Tom Locke coaching members in sparring. The competition team competes at various tournaments throughout the year. The club grows to more than twenty members.

1994 University Taekwondo Championship 1994-96
In 1994 Tom Locke, following his graduation from Trent in 1993, moved to London to pursue other career opportunities and Doug Johnson assumed the operation of Peterborough Taekwondo School. David Braithwaite assisted Doug by continued with the instruction and coaching duties at Trent University. The club continued to attend tournaments and grew in size. During this time four members of the Trent University Club were promoted to 1st Dan Black Belt.

1996-97
Club instruction assumed by Diane Notarangelo. Club closes at the end of the academic year.

2000-04
1995 University Taekwondo Championship Trent Taekwondo is restarted by Doug Johnson 3rd Dan and Spencer Scott 1st Dan. Spencer was a black belt product of the 1995-96 Trent Taekwondo Club. Fleming Taekwondo is started in the winter semester instructed by the same duo. Over this time the Trent Taekwondo Competition is restarted and the club grows from eight members to thirty.

2004-07
Spencer leaves Trent Taekwondo for opportunities in Nova Scotia. Doug continues to endure the insanity inherent in martial art instruction. Trent Taekwondo promotes its first black belt since 1996. Over the next two years seven more black belts are promoted.
